Fish 'Tacos'

| | Comments (0)

fish tacos
You are Fish 'Tacos.' You might think you're
exotic and worldly-wise, but in reality you're
just a bunch of crap on toast. Repeat after
me: 'just because you put something in
quotation marks doesn't make it so.' And
'taco' isn't Spanish for 'toast.'

Will this weight watchers card thing ever DIE!?!? And, strangely, one of the only memes that is even remotely accurate!

I ate a baby octopus!

| | Comments (2)

Just got back from another morning at Japantown in SF. Picked up... a ton of books at Kinokinuya *cringe*... I know, I know. I just got rid of FIVE CRATES. And now I bring home, erm... 7 more books.

Such is the life of an incurable collector.

But they are the awesome books. I'll spend the weekend in the tub flipping through them. Yum.

Oh yeah. So the octopus. Took Mr. Kallisti to Isobune. He'd never been to a sushi boat place. He's really been enjoying the plethora of sushi/fresh fish out here (he's recently from Michigan). So we did the sushi boat thing! I was very adventurous. And ate everything that looked pretty. Including teensy octopus that looked like it was in a red pepper sauce and wrapped in seaweed. Tiny suckers! I am very proud and triumphant (I've been terrified of seafood for most of my life. This is big stuff). I had all kinds of critters. But my favorite was a giant handroll of unagi, avocado and crab. OH MY GAWD. I almost ate two of them, but they were huge.

So yeah, I'm feelin' all replete. And stuff.

So. Before I go start on my kimono project (got the pattern resized! woo!) I grabbed a couple pictures of Fifi. She doesn't wear her default FCS wig too much, but it is soooo lovely. And I hadn't tried any dark eyes in her and thought she might look swell in Demelza's default cobalt. And day'um! Dark eyes make her look much more demure. I still love her so much. If anyone ever thinks these dolls aren't worth their price tag... oh man. They're like nothin' on earth.

bunny_azure03.jpg

bunny_azure02.jpg

And it is very cool a few other people are going to try the Kimono Project™ ! We should all post results. Here's the pattern, to refresh. Enlarge 121% to fit SD13.

Oh, and we bought seven sets of re-ment. Eeeee! Mr. Kallisti has the knack of picking the set we want. And I don't. So we went back and bought a bunch of the baby sets and I still didn't get the ones I wanted! *cry*

But we got some cooly cool ones. Woo.

Oh yeah, and *cough*... I'm currently in the market for 18mm nice glass eyes in pretty colors. My girls wear 20mm. And all I have are some red mac creatives that I *think* are 18mm.

And I don't know how to find nice Lusis eyes! 12mm! Heck!

Over and out... that is Saturday's report. It is cold. Brrrr!

The long lost Reno trip pictures

Normally I would have just forgotten about them after all this time (three weeks ago), but some of them were too funny not to share. Click piccie below for gallery:

Thanksgiving was the lovely. We made roasted garlic mashed potatoes, italian sausage and sourdough stuffing, grease beans, and homemade organic cranberry sauce with orange and apple and spicey things. Mmmm. My brother took care of the exquisite bird. And then gave us half of it to take home. Oh boy. Since my stepmother complained about the hillbilly music we were playin', we put on the Cyndi Lauper & Love & Rockets. Which made my night. They never play my music. My brother usually plays John Denver or Mack Davis. But since we brought him bottle of bourbon he promised not to. Oh, and I had mudslides all night.

It was warm and fuzzy with lots of poo talk during dinner. I hearts my fambly.

My mother in law was in town for a few days, so Mr. Meathead and I took the opportunity to take her to some of our favorite restaurants, and even one new place! Not all the pix are even half top notch, but all the food was reeeeeal good.

Henry's Hunan in the news!

| | Comments (0)

Anyone who knows me KNOWS "Henry's" is my favorite restaurant. Simply because it is the best damn food on the planet.

Check out "Cook's Night Out" from the Chronicle.

And here's my attempt at Henry's style yumminess: Mrs. Meathead's Hunan Whoopdie!

My theory about Potato Salad: Nobody likes potato salad. The standard fare deli salads, unless you are lucky, are disgusting to say the least. I was an adult before I had potato salad that tickled my fancy. And now I'm fairly obsessed with it, and usually to my disappointment I'll try it wherever I go.

This love/hate relationship forced me to try my hand at it myself. There are a few certainties with my potato salad: no sweet things, and no eggs. I've had plenty of potato salads with eggs that I liked, but it is always my least favorite part, and in bad potato salads it is down right scary. And I'm just generally morally opposed of mixing sweet and savory on principal. There are always exceptions, but usually only with thai food, or quails stuffed with sausage and figs. So no sweet pickles PLEASE.

Orange Julius fakey style

| | Comments (2)

Ferget the new mall Orange Julius. I want to take you back. Way baaack, deep into the 70's. When Orange Julius was a "devilish good drink" and they also served greasy hamburgers and fries and an Orange Julius tasted like frothy orangey-vanilly goodness.

orange-julius.jpg

Well that flavor is back, in a packet. .99 cents o' fun. Just add orange juice, crushed ice in a blender and woo-hoo. We found this in an unlikely place hanging above the veggie bins in the produce section at our local giant conglomerate food chain. Go. Now. Relive the glory.

Chile Verde!

| | Comments (0)

[as crossposted from Meathenge.com!]

What do you do when you buy a three pack of lean pork roasts from Costco and have a delivery of fresh organic vegetables featuring a large sack of tomatillos?!?! Make Chile Verde!

This is a free wheelin' combo recipe. Inspired by a recipe our father sent me and several random recipes off the internet. Some of the amounts are guestimates, so please feel free to flavor to taste!

2lb lean costco pork roast (or other porky meaty goodness)
12-14 tomatillos peeled & chopped
1/4 cup homemade chicken stock
3 jalapenos
1 anaheim chile
1 pasilla chile
small fistfull of cilantro
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp sea salt
wee bit fresh sage
1 white onion chopped
3 cloves garlic smashed
3 tbsp flour
1 tbsp cornstarch

Place chopped tomatillos, cilantro, all chiles, chicken stock, sage & cumin into blender and whip it up until well blended. Set aside.

Sautee garlic and onions in some olive oil. Chop raw pork roast into one inch cubes, and sautee until it turns white. Add sifted flour and cornstarch and stir. Add tomatillo purree and stir. It should look like this!

Cook for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until porky bits are tender and falling apart. Stir occasionally to keep from sticking to bottom. Add a bit more cornstarch/flour if it needs to thicken. So rich and yummy and mild you can hardly believe you made it yourself. Eat large bowlfull. Serve with stuff! But especially tortillas.

I served ours with homemade salsa. Just chop 1/2 white onion, 2 or 3 jalapenos, some cilantro, and a couple medium sized heirloom tomatoes and squeeze in a fresh lemon or lime. Add salt if you want to. So good you can eat it with a spoon.

me and ohmeohmy is havin' a good time. s'ok. we're fired anyway.

Frankfurter Spectacular. That is all. Yes, it is peeled wieners wrapped around a pineapple. You go WEIGHTWATCHERS! Circa 1974 of course.

Saigon Seafood Harbor

[as crossposted from Meathenge.com]

Hi, I'm Mrs. Meathead and I will be your hostess for today.

Today, the Friday before Labor Day, I am "working from home." And usually when I'm "working from home" myself and Mr. Meathead take the opportunity to go out to fancy lunches we normally wouldn't have the opportunity to have. Our recent favorite restaurant is just behind our house, "Saigon Seafood Harbor." We have the great pleasure of having the parking lot to the Pacific East Mall in Richmond as our backyard. Well "Saigon" isn't in the mall, it is next to it. So we drove there. It is huge, with lots of parking. And they need it because this place hops. For lunch, go no later than 11:30am, for dinner, no later than 5:30pm. Or you will be cranky.

(clearly, I'm bored)

I905PP-large.jpg
New, Improved "TastyBite Ready Meals" instant Indian & Thai fud in foil packets! I liked it before, but now it comes with a snack tray for nooking and a spoon for eating. It's vegetarian AND it tastes good and is good for ya. Right now they're packaging them with a $1 coupon (and they're only $2.70 at TJ's already) + 30% off if you order $30 or more from the website (w/ coupon in box). We're thinkin' of ordering a bunch for our unemployment bunker, along with toilet paper and cocktail olives. It might keep me off the hot dogs for a while. Ha!

<<= I'm eating this now. It doesn't suck!

Oh wow, that was good.

Holy Crap.

We just ate the best food ever. A newish place across the street next to the Pacific East Mall called "Saigon: Seafood Harbor"

Man, O man. That was the best food ever. And it was served all fancy like on very artsy craftsy pottery plates. The fried chow mein was insane. I got the combination and it had mystery seafood in it. And guess what!?!? I just put it in my mouth! And I liked it! I think we determined after that they were scallops. A little backstory: I've had severe seafood phobia most of my life and have been trying over the past ten years or so to chip away at it. This was a brave moment for me. Yay. The potstickers came with a fancy pink vinegar with ginger shreds in it. And the spicey shrimp were deeeelectable. Oh, and the tea. Tasted like perfume. Wow.

We've been eating like kings for my birthday weekend. I was so hyped up angry from work friday that I demanded sushi when I got home and lots of it. Went to Kasuga's and totally had a feast. And they are so friendly and yummy. Oh, and we had "godzilla rolls"... how can you pass up Godzilla Rolls!?!? They were tempura'd and deep fried yellow tail rolls, with red hot chili paste squirted on them. I figured it was Godzilla's firey breath that cooked them.

And then, for my birthday, we went to Ajanta, the World's Most Exquisite Indian Food (tm) and again, totally pigged out with a feast. Again, super nice and friendly service and a huge mural opposite our table with lots of naked frolicking people. Nipples! At dinner time! Yay!

And then, whoops! Just got these off of DOA:

No, not Cyndy! But the thin green Zouki eyes. Thank you Aimee for your new forum with the "Marketplace"!!!! And thanks to Gloria who sold them to me. They are 22mm and my girls usually wear 20mm, but I thought they would look good with big green swimmy eyes. I have determined that pale, pale eyes are my favorite. And good eyes, with everyone shutting down, are SO HARD to get. Ok, but... um. I shouldna bought anything. That whole saving money thing, which I've been doing good at recently, but it really has to be a priority. :p

Meat love.

This is not a vegetarian friendly entry (not that all ya'll aren't welcome).

House of Prime Rib was awesome! Much more hoppin' than I would have expected on a Wednesday night at 8:30pm. The place was packed. Real nice joint. Olde World San Francisco style, lots of charm, and leather booths. We got a nice intimate one that unfortunately happened to be squashed up the backside of a large party crammed onto a four seater table. But they left half way through our meal, and once the cocktails were served, we were too happy to care.

Our order was taken by a cordial version of Steven Wright. "How are we doing tonight folks. I'm Michael, I'll be your waiter for this evening. Are you ready to have some fun, tonight? Good. We're going introduce you to your carver "Jose" later on (Jose, was also busing tables when he wasn't hauling the "Airstream" around) but right now can I get some more drinks?"

Rum & Coke and a Gin & Tonic please.

"Comin' riiight up. Ok, let's Rock and Roll!"

Nice cocktails by the way. Old Skool style as well. My Rum 'n' Coke was pure high quality rum on the rocks with a squirt of coke for color. Mr. Kallisti was real happy with his G & T as well. We had two of each. Mmmmm.

Now, the deal with HoPR is that there is one item on the menu, that is Prime Rib ™, and that is it. You get five choices of cut, salad, creamed spinach and choice of mashed or baked potato. Now I'd heard that the "Henry VIII" cut was the thing to get. What I didn't know is that this cut is two inches thick and on the bone, baby. They wheel the Airstream Trailer of Meat (terminology swavely stolen from Swingingwake) over to your table and serve you up the cut and done-ness of your choice. I usually go for medium rare, because although I like bloody, some people's idea of bloody is still cold in the middle (*cough* Dad). I was a bit disappointed though that their medium rare was more medium than rare. But fear not! You get seconds. Yes indeedy. They inform you when you order that you may have seconds. Normally I would have no need to partake, but since I didn't get my bloody, we partook. It was a very delicate lady-like slice, thank goodness. But oh so delish.

The salad was generous, but blah. The creamed spinach was very good, yummy even. They really know how to make even the vegetables bad for you in this joint. The mashed taters were divine with just a sploosh of dark rich gravy pooled in the middle.

Oh! And after they plop this 15lb cut of prime rib in front of you, he wheels in another Cart of Sauce. You have three choices of horseradish, mild, medium and hot. I picked medium and OH BOY, was I lucky! He put a big icecream scoop of hot pink whipped horseradish flavored butter on my plate, that turned the meat juices into a frothy pink yummy mess. This stuff was scary AND tasted good. Yay. Mr. Kallisti, who's sole reason to eat sushi is to get a big mouthful of wasabi, asked for the spicy horseradish. After the initial blast and teary deluge he stated "This is horseradish the way God intended."

We ate a lot. Oh, and then had a whole pan of Crème Broulee. Dumb Americans, crème broulee is supposed to come in these little egg cups. You have a tiny spoon, crack the top, have a deliciously fat saturated bite and then you're done! Yay. Well, no. Their Crème was about seven inches in diameter, and pure heaven in every inch. Damn them. We shared and I still couldn't eat my half.

Oh, and on a side note, I'd like very much to introduce you to our new kitten: Biscuit Lafitte! ("biscuit" pronounced "biskwee" when we're frisky) Click below for cuteness. He's got the damnedest habit of holding down your face and forcibly inserting his tongue into every oriface on your head. I haven't quite figured out the purpose of this yet.

Warning! This post is guaranteed to make your teeth rot! ♥ August 4th, 2003 ♥

Our first anniversary is today. We're celebrating by taking the day off and having Pajama Day™! And then we're going out to "House of Prime Rib" for dinner tonight. Oh boy. Meat Kitsch extravaganza!

This is been the happiest year of my life. Despite other issues, I am so eternally grateful to be where I am now that other problems shrink in comparison. And this is coming from someone who didn't believe in true love, fidelity and happily forever after. For real. It can happen for the freakiest of us. Indeed.

Blythe! Across the street!

| | Comments (1)

Went to the Pacific East Mall across the street to find big plastic flowers for Fifi's hair (more on that later) and the asian bookstore has ILYIT Blythe! For $100!

Anyone local who wants her, they had like six of them on the shelf. Pretty cool. Here's to hoping they get more in the future, eh!

We also ate at a new restaurant that just opened, of Macau food! Neato! I really, really wish I was more adventurous in the food department. The Pacific East restaurants aren't your typical namby pamby asian restaurants we white folks usually go to. These places are hardcore, and most of the dishes are heads, lips and organ meats. Heh. My uncle would have ate it all!

[Vegetarians can stop reading here]

We by-passed the pork intestine salad and had crispy roasted pork instead. Awesome! Little cubes of pork goodness with the skin still on and all salty and crunchy. We had shrimp dumpling soup that had whole fresh shrimp in the dumplings. Yum, and had some rice noodles that were tossed with bean sprouts and shrimp and chicken and yumminess. And then, oh boy, salty, spicey fried chicken wings. I am a huge fan of the wing, and these were GOOD.

Yay for Macau food! Even if there's only five items on the menu that don't make my knees quiver. So good.

I want to watch someone eat a fish maw someday. Really.

Woo!

I was on the phone with Mr. Kallisti from work and was fiddling around with stuff on my desk. I went to move the spooky house Lemax catalog and my BART tickets fell out! YAYAYAY!

I took the catalog out of my bag on tuesday when I posted about Dr. Stretch N. Pulls and didn't know the ticket holder had gotten stuck between the pages.

So relieved. We're gonna celebrate by buying the torture chamber tomorrow night. Woo.

Also, yesterday I bought cheese cubes to supplement my salad and it turns out they're half american cheese. Bleh! They were "pepper jack," whodda guessed they would have spiked it with plastic food!?!?! Ouch. I feel sick.

Meat Fairy ahoy!

meatfairy-005.jpg

What better day than Memorial Day to present my brother, Mr. Biggles, with his Meat Fairy Dollfie. He had so much fun with my Kallisti doll at one of the last bbq's that I immediately started planning to make one for his very own, and here she is! We're about to take her over to the BBQ (along with my famous pasta salad).

meatfairy-003.jpgmeatfairy-009.jpgmeatfairy-010.jpgmeatfairy-022.jpg

She's an Azone #2 (kisara-ish) head on an Obitsu body, if'n you didn't know. Shown here with some items from a Barbie BBQ set. Oh, and I stitched the wee oven mitts myself. Awwww.

Day trip

| | Comments (7)

I used the excuse that I needed to get new facial scrub to make a day trip into the city today as Sephora is the only place I know that carries my cleanser. Woo. Mr. Kallisti was game.

lunch.

Sometimes a broccoli and gorgonzola salad just doesn't cut it. I may have to go for the ramen later. Need salt. Also, the new tofu I was trying to ween myself onto just isn't doing it for me (it is half the price of the stuff I usually get for lunch). I will switch back to the baked/pressed kind. This fluffy flavored stuff is just making me naseous. Wrong texture.

See, even though I love the meat products, I still eat like a vegetarian half the time. I make my meat count.

My Death Clock sez I'm going to live til: Wednesday, December 22, 2060

Woooo! That is a good long time. Rad. Just enough time to watch the oceans boil and the ice caps melt and San Francisco turn into Hawaii. Aloha!

Also found this postcard on ebay:

elcerrito-motel.jpg

It's a motel in El Cerrito/Richmond (it's right on the border), and my first home when I was a wee infant was right on the hill behind it, and my Grandmother lived just down the street. Now it is El Cerrito's only crack motel. But they've since built a restaurant on stilts in the front parking lot which musta gone up soon after this postcard was taken because it's been there since I was a baby. Now it is the best Thai restaurant ON THE PLANET, Sa Wooei. I will try to buy this postcard.

I collect postcards, btw. Send me your old motel & haufbrau postcards!

Poor Calamity, I'm going to repaint her from scratch. From several (too many) angles she looks like she has down syndrome. So disappointing because her eyes are really well painted! Just, erm, too far apart and wall-eyed. Cry.

Also, I sold my camera yesterday to . Wooo! And I'm getting my car fixed tomorrow which is WAY past due.

Blythe Gathering, weee!

| | Comments (1)

There were A LOT (34? 37?) of blythes and a lot of cameras!

Full Gallery: http://www.blastmilk.com/blythefest/

Quick rundown: 12 of us (including 3 spouses! howz that for dedication!?!) met at the Wishbone shop on Irving in San Francisco. After a quick headcount we headed over to Manny's (sp?) Thai and took half the tables. Luckily the place was empty! There was more Blything than food but the food was reeeeal good. We then trekked into the park (not far) to the Japanese Tea Gardens for some exquisite photo opportunities. We got lots of stares and comments, and folks taking pictures of our dolls and of us taking pictures. Three Japanese girls squealed with delight when they saw us and took some pictures, and got really excited when Devon and I whipped out the Super Dollfies. Weeee!

It was overcast, cold and windy, but our pix still came out a little over exposed in the Tea Garden. It was an awesome and sweet day. So happy to meet and re-meet everyone!

*hearts hearts hearts*

Spring has Sprung

| | Comments (2)

First off I would like to congratulate my brother whose meat blog Meathenge.com, to which I sometimes contribute, got a mention in Gourmet Magazine this month.

I am super pleased that I've been quoted in the magazine for saying "so awesomely yummy." Yay! Just what I want to be remembered for. But he did refer to my Sukiyaki... which was so awesomely yummy I would probably write the same thing again.

So, it is the first day of Spring, which has actually sprung in California. Neener to the rest of the country. Nyah!

Here's Fifi in her new duds, and yes, she has a tiara on: flowers-001_th.jpg

Meat Fest

| | Comments (1)

Wait? What? Meat Fest? Yes indeedy. Whodda thunkit that when I made the post about the Chicken Fryin' Dress that Kallistidoll would actually become a spokesperson. But when I whipped her outa my purse at my brother's bbq yesterday, his glee was clear to be seen, whether it was due to her ample cleavage or perhaps because she matched the table cloth, I don't know.
